Ali camp expresses interest in Holm-Sanders The camp of Laila Ali has expressed interest in Ali possibly fighting the winner of the Holly Holm-Mary Jo Sanders fight on Friday, sometime next year. Stay tuned . . .
Holm, Sanders speak out Holly Holm (21-1-2, 6 KOs), of Albuquerque, and Detroit’s Mary Jo Sanders (25-0, 8 KOs), participated today in a national teleconference. On Friday, the two will square off in a battle of pound-for-pound supremacy, at Isleta Casino & Resort.
------ Is training the same for this fight, as any other?
Sanders: “This is for pound-for-pound supremacy. It’s not the same. This has put me at a totally different level. I’ve been sparring 30-40 rounds a week, with southpaw Damien Fuller. I’ve taken training the nth degree, and then some. This is the big one.”
------
Holm: “I’ve done things a little different, but as far as overtraining, I’ve been careful not to overtrain. I train at a high pace already. It’s been more intense, but I haven’t been adding workouts. … I know this is the biggest fight of my career.”
------ Comments from the trainers
Jimmy Mallo, Sanders’ trainer: “Holly is a very good fighter … but Mary Jo is a great fighter. They know they’re in deep water, because Mary Jo is the whole package. She’s an adaptable fighter. She’s in a different league. I’ll bet [Mike Winkeljohn] right now--$5,000 on a gentleman’s bet. That’s how sure I am. I’m not bragging—I can back it up. Holly has no chance of winning this fight.”
------
Mike Winkeljohn, Holms’ trainer: “If could find a line on this fight somewhere, I’d put a whole bunch of money on Holly.”
Emery-Martinez added to June 12 show An IFBA World welterweight title fight between Jill Emery and Angel Martinez has been added to Thursday night’s (June 12) Fox Sports Net’s Best Damn Championship Fight Night Period card at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Emery-Martinez for the vacant IFBA World welterweight championship replaces the 10-round co-feature with Elena “Baby Doll” Reid (9-4-5, 5 KOs) defending her IFBA World flyweight crown. Reid’s original opponent, Russian invader Anastasia Toktaulova (12-8, 2 KOs), failed to get her visa issued and her replacement, Crystal Hoy, wasn’t approved because she’s still under suspension. Emery was already on the June 12th show, scheduled to face Crystal Nickel in a 6-round bout, but she gladly accepted a world title shot against Martinez. Reid now faces undefeated Ava Knight (3-0-1) in a 6-round non-title fight.
- - - - - -
Las Vegas’ undefeated mega-star Melinda Cooper (18-0, 10 KOs) fights for the first time in nearly 18 months versus KO artist Donna “Nature Girl” Biggers (19-7-1, 16 KOs), of Shelby, North Carolina, in a special 6-round junior featherweight bout. Also on the undercard in a 6-rounder, junior featherweight contender Jeri Stizes (14-7-1, 6 KOs), of Springfield, Missouri, takes on always tough Ela “Bam Bam” Nunez (6-3, 2 KOs), fighting out of Jamestown, New York.

Garside refuses to lose against Hallback Josh Canty, Jeannine Garside’s (7-0-1, 3 KO) trainer, is preparing the WIBA featherweight champ for her June 13 IFBA title clash with Chevelle Hallback, (26-5-2, 11 KO).
- - - - - -
Canty acknowledges Hallback is a fast starter, noting the first round between Hallback and Melissa Hernandez, when Hernandez was staggered early and hung on to fight Hallback to an entertaining draw. "Jeannine will have to weather the storm but she brings amateur skills, and great speed to combat Chevelle," Canty said. "While Chevelle will get her shots in, Jeannine isn’t going anywhere. She will look to use her speed, counter punch and make her miss."
- - - - - -
"Jeannine Garside is NOT looking to suffer her first loss against Chevelle Hallback. Jeannine is ready to battle anything Chevelle puts in front of her. Jeannine is going to put on a show that proves she is among the elite in women’s boxing. Chevelle has great heart, but I’ve never seen anything like Jeannine’s heart and desire to win and be the best. I hope Chevelle at least brings the game she brought against Hernandez because this fight has the potential to be the fight of both their lives."

Garside refuses to lose against Hallback WBO, WBA and IBA lightweight champ Nate Campbell spoke out on the upcoming IFBA title fight between Chevelle Hallback (26-5-2) and Jeannine Garside (7-0-1) on June 13, at the Isleta Casino Resort in Albuquerque, NM on the Fresquez Promotions "Finally" women’s championship PPV.
- - - - - -
"Chevelle is more than just a fighter, she’s a friend I love and respect," Campbell said, "But she’s also as tenacious as they come. She can be as mean as they come, too. Chevelle is very competitive, and a good fight will make Chevelle do what she’s gotta do."
- - - - - -
With Garside’s 40-5 amateur record and her 7-0-1 record in the pros, Campbell realizes she brings a lot of experience to the ring, but he knows about Chevelle’s skill first hand. "You know Chevelle is my sparring partner," he stated. " Chevelle can do it all and do anything in the ring she has a mind to. She is one of the best fighters of her era. She lost to Luica Rijker in only her second pro fight and beat Emiko Raika in Japan -- I was in her corner. Chevelle has experience out of this world and you can’t ask for much more than that."
- - - - - -
Along with experience against such tough fighters as Rijker, Campbell reminds Garside that Chevelle also comes to the ring with equal ability in both hands. "She better be careful,"
Nate warned. "Chevelle can punch with both hands. If they’re looking for a faded warrior to put Garside on the map with a win, I don’t see it being Chevelle Hallback. I don’t believe any woman can beat her at 100-percent."

Kentikian destroys Ortega The “Killer Queen“ Susi Kentikian successfully defended her WBA and WIBF flyweight belts in the very first round against American Mary Ortega at the Brandberge Arena in Halle an der Saale. After a slow start, which saw both fighters trying to get into their rhythm, it was Kentikian who got off first. A quick combination punctuated by a short right hand to the jaw sent Ortega down for the first time in the fight. The challenger was able to get up but was unable to defend herself against the overwhelming Kentikian. Seconds later, she went down again. Another barrage of punches forced the referee to call a halt to the action at 1:53 minutes of the round. Kentikian won in a stunning fashion, although unexpected, she run over her foe. On 3rd May the two will face off in a 6 round non title fight. This is going to be the second time the boxers step into the ring together. Their first meeting in December 2007 was an exciting match with many fans thrilled at the newcomer's fluidity in the boxing ring. Charity ran circles around the former champion and managed a draw score from one judge. Conjestina is fresh out of a 3rd round stoppage of another Kenyan Patroba Lihavi [0-1] on the 19th of April 2008. That fight was Lihavi's professional debut 'I am in a better position to win this rubber match' the soft spoken Mukami said. Scores were 97-94 on all cards for the hometown favorite. "Karolina was downright cheated," stated Lukasik's trainer Conny Mittermeier. "Salandy wouldn't engage Karolina and ran away constantly. She only defended herself with headbutts which she was warned for. Everyone in the hall, except for Salandy's clan, saw Karolina as the winner and even congratulated her on her victory. What happened here we can only describe as a farce. According to the rules, we have lodged a protest against the circumstances and outrageous judging of the fight."

Lukasik, who fights under the Spotlight Boxing banner, made the long trek to the Caribbean with trainer Conny Mittermeier. "Her ambition is truly enormous," says Mittermeier.
